In 1887, Conrad Boos Sr. founded and named John Boos after his son. Boos, a blacksmith was asked by a butcher to make him a wooden block when he saw how the block had absorbed the shock of Boo's hammer. That was the first of millions to be produced by the John Boos Company. By the 1940's butcher blocks could be found in every restaurant, food store and butcher shop in America.
In the World War II era, the manufacturing of butcher blocks was replaced with foodservice tables, work tables and tabletops for the Army, Navy and Marine mess halls and kitchens. Although the government contracts absorbed 90 percent of the business, it led to the realization that they could successfully produce products in addition to butcher blocks.
During the 1960s and 70s, John Boos was producing metal tables made of poly or synthetic tops, stainless steel tops and maple tops. The company continued to expand and currently occupies a 150,00 squart foot facility in Effingham, IL and a 65,000 squart foot facility in Phillipsburg, PA and Suring, WI where wooden school furniture is produced.
Today, John Boos products like wood cutting boards, butcher block tables, island tables, utility tables, stainless steel work tables, and shelves are quality made, functional, and enhances a home's decor.
