Dexter-Russell Manufacturing Guide

Dexter-Russell originated when the first two cutlery companies in American, the Harrington Cutlery Company and the John Russell Cutlery Company merged. Henry Harrington, a New England Craftsman established the first cutlery in the U.S. on June 18, 1818 in Southbridge, Massachusetts, manufacturing surgical equipment, shoe knives and well crafted firearms. In 1984, Harrington gave his line of fine kitchen and table cutlery the Dexter Trade name that was soon adopted in America's homes and restaurants.

In 1834, John Russell built a water powered factory on the banks of the Green River near Greenfield, Massachusetts. He began to manufacture chisels, axe heads and knives. Their product line expanded when Russell hired skilled European Craftsmen that were skilled in producing high quality hunting knives for the American frontier.

On May 1, 1933, the two companies merged to create the largest cutlery manufacturing company in the U.S. In 2001, the company changed it's name to Dexter-Russell, Inc. to reflect their long rich history.

Today, Dexter-Russell produces a wide array of fine professional cutlery like the Connoisseur line. All of the Connoisseur cutlery is made of high carbon steel that is stone-ground by hand and honed to sharpness. The sanitary handles made of laminated rosewood won't stain.

The non-slip Sofgrip line of knives molds to your hand. It is ergonomically designed to reduce stress of repetitive movements.

Sani-Safe knives are stain-free, high carbon, hand ground and honed. The slip-resistant grip handle is made of polypropylene texture. A strong bonded handle prevents the blade from pulling out.

Green River knives are handmade with North American black walnut handles, which makes this line of knives attractive and of the finest quality. Purchase separately or give a six piece steak knife set as a gift.

The firm grip and soft comfort of a V-Lo knife is what Chef's ask for by name. You'll find these and other exceptional knives for every job in the kitchen.
